Phase 2 stops when the dieter is satisfied with his or her weight. It re-introduces most fruits and vegetables and some whole grains as well.

Phase 3 is the maintenance phase of the South Beach Diet plan and ideally lasts forever. There is no list of permitted and prohibited foods. Instead, the dieter is expected to understand the basic rules of the diet and follow them.
